Jiu Jitsu , like many other martial arts or sports , is heavy on traditionalization in regards to the Jiu Jitsu uniform called a gi ( pronounced like Glee with out the L ) . Tying the belt is no exception. Many Jiu Jitsu professors will make it a point to teach the proper way to tie a belt several times and expect the student to have it memorized by the second time it is taught.
Well , as most of you who grapple may know, at times it is difficult to remember this procedure after a training session, a warm up, and then a final spar or ” roll ” of the night. Sometimes the details get clouded in a sea of cardio fatigue and you may not remember how to tie your belt by the end of class. If your profesor is like many in the community, you may be subject to a random belt tying fiasco in front of the class. It doesn’t have to be that way if you remember to tie your belt correctly. As many times as we put on and take off our gi, one would think that it should be second nature by now .
Notice the key word being SHOULD be.
Well that’s not entirely true. Many of times have higher ranked belts not been able to properly tie a belt.
