This month we feature Portage County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy located in Kent & Ravenna Ohio respectively. Portage County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is owned by William Jones, a Pedro Sauer Jiu Jitsu brown belt and located within the SPC Crossfit gym and Global Martial Arts.

As head instructor, William Jones has been practicing martial arts since the age of 6 , starting with Shotokan Karate , he has trained in several martial arts disciplines including Aiki JuJitsu and Kung Fu. With the recent explosion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, William Jones has been training in the ” gentle art ” for many years now , and as an Iraq war veteran, he was in charge of teaching hand to hand combat and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his platoon, and also achieving brown belt status under world renowned Jiu Jitsu professor, Pedro Sauer.

William Jones assistant, Nathan August plays a vital role in the overall training at Portage County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, becoming the head instructor when William cannot teach, he has been training martial arts since 2000 and holds a black belt in karate, crossing over into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2007  earning his blue belt at that time.

If any other name synonymous with the history of Jiu Jitsu is more prevalent  than the Gracie’s it’s Pedro Sauer. Being an 8th degree Coral belt ( alternating red and black ) under Rickson Gracie, Pedro Sauer came up in the ranks of the early days of modern day Jiu Jitsu in Brazil. Spreading his message of everything from self-defense  Jiu Jitsu to Sport Jiu Jitsu, he has brought his official instruction creed to Portage County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and William Jones.
